Edna Gallmon Cooke • The Hammer Rings • 1961

Many thanks to H.M.S. at Cussin’ & Carryin’ On.

  1. Edna Gallmon Cooke had a great voice! The only thing that lessens my interest ever so slightly in this record, even though I've tried to develop a taste for it, is the organ accompaniment.

  2. I love this record! Ever since first hearing it on Cussin’ & Carryin’ On, I’ve been wanting to share it here. Mme Cooke’s vocal is so understated, yet so deep, and with the accompaniment and background vocals staying well back, this performance is as powerful as if she were shouting it from the rooftops. Discovering records like this is one of the reasons I continue to keep my ear to the ground. . . .
