PETE WELDING, 1935–1995

Today would have been Pete Welding’s 78th birthday, but he only made 60. If you don’t know who he is, have a look at his abbreviated biography on Wikipedia. He was a good friend to me and many others and he is truly missed.

  1. Last night I revisited Pete Welding's recording of Fred McDowell titled "Long Ways From Home," from 1966, which was released on Milestone Records. It had been quite a while since I had listened to that precious gem, and I thought about what a special relationship those two must have had to be able to get down on record such wonderful, meaningful, free improvisational blues masterpieces. For me, this is Fred at his best, which means that it's the blues at its best. I am so grateful those two got together. Rest in Peace Pete Welding and Fred McDowell.
